Shanta Lee Gander Presents: Bars Fight, A Poem by Lucy Terry Prince

A poem by Lucy Terry Prince, a freed slave who owned land and lived with her husband Abijah Prince in Guilford,Vermont. She is considered the nation’s first African American poet. The ballad is about an attack upon two white families by Native Americans on August 25, 1746. The attack occurred in an area of Deerfield called “The Bars”, which was a colonial term for a meadow.
